Moving Boundaries Art Project
Lorna writes about Sri Lanka where she was facilitating setting up an activity center for children in need.
I ran a program called Moving Boundaries which was designed to incorporate fun methods of confidence building, participation, team spirit & community awareness, using the mediums of movement, drama, mime, language and art.
One of my goals was to network and twin young people and children with schools and youth groups here in Co. Kerry Ireland.
Through working with the children and adults I became closely associated with the local school.
Many of the students there are tsunami affected, orphaned and children in extreme need. They are using the drop in centers and accommodation camps set up by Save The Children and Enfants Du Monde and were consequently coming to my sessions at Camp Coconut Activity Center kamburagamua.
The school has a committed principal and staff, however the facilities are very poor.
The school has 1500 combined primary & senior students and classes are often as large as 45. there is no particular space as art room, home sciences take place in a room of 25 sq.metre, which is also combined as a sick bay and sewing room. There are no computers in the school yet the principal holds computer theory classes in order to prepare the students for further education and careers.
The school ethos in the principals own words are :
"We want to donate to the children fair opinions, kind actions, the ability to accept victory and defeat in the same manner, good mental strength and self confidence."
My aims are to set up art exhibitions in Ireland & abroad & sell cards and prints with the students art work in order to fund raise to buy computers and additional art facilities for the school.
I am therefore looking for space in galleries during appropriate Arts Festivals, media coverage, promotion, and any positive assistance and suggestions.
The art works will be arriving on the first march. I hope to hold the first exhibition at Easter.
The art themes given are:
1. How my life was affected by the tsunami.
2. My life my culture.
3. The elements ,earth , air, fire, water.
The age group is 12 – 18 yrs.
Medium : any, on paper or card
Name of school: Kamburagamua Maha Vidyalaya

Although the tragedy of the tsunami has gone from our thoughts I witnessed the fact that there are still a huge amount of poverty stricken communities living in emergency housing and even tents. As a result many of these areas are becoming shanty towns.
Politically Sri Lanka is in a volatile situation, civil war and terrorism is a very real threat. Education, communication and networking are powerful weapons for children and young people who otherwise have no means of defense.
